ABARS/Assist

The architecture of ABARS/Assist is centered around three main components: the Backup Manager, the Restore Manager, and the Monitoring Agent. The Backup Manager is responsible for scheduling and executing backup operations. It interacts with DFSMShsm to perform ABARS backups, utilizing the z/OS system services for communication.

The Restore Manager handles the restoration of data from backups. It also interacts with DFSMShsm to restore datasets and volumes, using z/OS system services. The Monitoring Agent provides real-time monitoring of backup and restore processes.

It collects performance metrics and status information, which is then displayed through the CLI. The system uses VSAM datasets for storing backup metadata, logs, and configuration data. The CLI provides the primary interface for interacting with the system, with commands such as `BACKUP`, `RESTORE`, `STATUS`, `REPORT`, and `CONFIG`.

The product does not expose any APIs. Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services. The system does not have any network requirements beyond standard z/OS connectivity.

The product supports RBAC with role-based permissions, ensuring secure access to backup and restore functions.
