Product Overview

The architecture of VTAM Virtual Printer is centered around several key components designed to manage and reroute print jobs efficiently. The VTAM Listener is responsible for receiving print requests from VTAM-connected printers. The LPD Server handles print requests from TCP/IP LPD clients.

The Spool Manager processes and manages print jobs, including queuing, prioritization, and hold/release functions. The Configuration Manager provides an interface for defining printer definitions, routing rules, and system parameters. Communication between components occurs primarily through z/OS internal mechanisms and VTAM and TCP/IP protocols.

Data storage relies on z/OS datasets for configuration and spool data. The system does not expose external APIs. Security is integrated with z/OS security features, including RACF, for authentication and access control.

Audit logging is provided through z/OS logging facilities. Compared to other solutions, VTAM Virtual Printer offers seamless integration with existing z/OS systems and robust print job management capabilities.
