Virtual Tape Advanced Recall

The VTAR architecture is designed to optimize dataset recall for batch processing. The core components include the VTAR Monitor, Recall Manager, and Dataset Catalog Interface. The VTAR Monitor is responsible for analyzing JCL and monitoring job activity to identify datasets required by batch jobs.

It uses z/OS system services to track job execution and dataset references. The Recall Manager initiates dataset recalls based on pre-defined criteria, such as dataset attributes and recall thresholds. It interacts with the virtual tape system to retrieve datasets.

The Dataset Catalog Interface interacts with the z/OS system catalog to retrieve dataset attributes and manage recall requests. It uses system catalog APIs to obtain information about datasets and their storage locations. Communication between components occurs within the z/OS environment using standard system services and interfaces.

Configuration is managed through JCL and configuration files. Key configuration parameters include dataset selection criteria, recall thresholds, and job monitoring settings. The system does not use external network protocols.

Security is managed through z/OS security features, such as RACF, for access control. Audit capabilities are provided through integration with z/OS logging facilities. VTAR's focus on proactive dataset recall distinguishes it from other solutions that may focus on data backup or archiving.
