Product Overview

The architecture of VDR LE is designed to provide a robust and efficient solution for backing up and restoring Virtual Tape Subsystem (VTS) data on z/OS. The main components include the VDR Control Program, the VDR Backup/Restore Utility, and the VTS Interface. The VDR Control Program acts as the central orchestrator, managing the overall backup and restore processes.

It coordinates the activities of the other components and handles job scheduling and resource allocation. The VDR Backup/Restore Utility is responsible for the actual data transfer operations. It reads data from the VTS and writes it to the specified tape devices during backup operations.

During restore operations, it reads data from the tape devices and writes it back to the VTS. The VTS Interface provides the necessary communication with the Virtual Tape Subsystem. It translates commands and data between the VDR LE components and the VTS.

Communication between these components is primarily internal, utilizing z/OS system services and APIs. Data is stored on tape, using standard tape formats. Configuration settings are stored in z/OS datasets, which are accessed by the VDR Control Program during operation.

The CLI provides the primary administrative interface, allowing for detailed control over backup and restore operations. Security is enforced through z/OS security features, such as RACF, which manages user authentication and access control. Audit logging is available to track all backup and restore activities, providing a detailed record of operations for compliance and troubleshooting purposes.

There are no external APIs or SDKs available for integration. The primary protocol used is the z/OS system interface for tape operations. Compared to other backup solutions, VDR LE offers a specialized approach tailored to the unique requirements of VTS environments.
