Product Overview
The architecture of VSAM Quick Index is designed for high-speed index rebuilding on z/OS. The main components include the Control Program, Input Reader, Index Builder, Data Reader, and Output Writer. The Control Program orchestrates the entire process, managing the flow of data and resources.
The Input Reader reads data from the input VSAM dataset. The Index Builder constructs the alternate index based on the data read. The Data Reader reads the data records.
The Output Writer writes the rebuilt index to the output dataset. Communication between these components is primarily through internal control blocks and data buffers managed by the Control Program. The utility uses VSAM datasets for input and output, and temporary datasets for intermediate storage during the build process.
The JCL interface is used to configure the utility, specifying the input dataset, the index to be built, and the output datasets. The JCL also defines the allocation parameters for temporary datasets. There are no specific network requirements or ports used by VSAM Quick Index, as it operates within the z/OS environment.
Access control is managed through the z/OS security system, such as RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret. The SYSPRINT DD statement in the JCL provides detailed logging for auditing and troubleshooting. The utility does not provide any APIs.
