Product Overview
The VS Cobol Interpreter's architecture is designed to provide a robust and efficient environment for executing OS/VS COBOL programs within a CICS system. The core component is the COBOL Interpreter Engine, which is responsible for parsing, translating, and executing the COBOL code. This engine emulates the behavior of the original OS/VS COBOL compiler and runtime libraries, ensuring compatibility with existing COBOL applications.
The CICS Interface component handles the interaction with the CICS region. It manages transaction initiation, resource access, and communication with other CICS services. This interface allows COBOL programs to function as standard CICS transactions.
The Data Access Layer provides access to various data sources, including VSAM files, sequential files, and other data storage mechanisms. This layer ensures that COBOL programs can access and manipulate data as they did in the original OS/VS environment. The interpreter does not use a specific database; instead, it relies on the data access methods supported by the original COBOL programs and the CICS environment.
Communication between components is primarily internal, using z/OS system services and CICS APIs. The interpreter does not expose external APIs such as REST or SOAP. Instead, it relies on native interfaces for integration with CICS and other z/OS components.
Network requirements are those inherent to CICS and z/OS, such as TCP/IP for communication. The interpreter's design prioritizes compatibility with existing OS/VS COBOL programs, ensuring minimal code changes are required for migration. The system's performance is optimized for efficient execution within the CICS environment, minimizing overhead and maximizing throughput.
The interpreter's architecture is designed for scalability, allowing it to handle a variety of workloads.
