VLOCK

VLOCK's architecture was centered around a distributed lock management system designed for VSE systems under VM. The core components included the Lock Manager, the Resource Monitor, and the Communication Handler. The Lock Manager was responsible for receiving, processing, and managing lock requests.

The Resource Monitor tracked the status of shared resources, ensuring data consistency. The Communication Handler facilitated inter-system communication using a proprietary protocol. Configuration was primarily managed through control files, which defined shared disk parameters and resource definitions.

The system did not expose any APIs. The communication between components was optimized for the z/OS environment. The Lock Manager used internal data structures to maintain lock information.

The Resource Monitor updated the status of resources based on lock and unlock operations. The Communication Handler ensured reliable message delivery between systems. VLOCK's design prioritized performance and reliability within the constraints of the VSE/VM environment.

However, VLOCK is not supported. Organizations should evaluate modern alternatives like Microsoft Failover Clustering or HDS TrueCopy.
