VPS/PCL

The architecture of VPS/PCL comprises several key components: the AFP to PCL translator, the print spool interface, the configuration manager, and the logging and auditing subsystem. The AFP to PCL translator is the core component, responsible for converting AFP data streams into PCL format. The print spool interface interacts with the z/OS print subsystem, intercepting AFP data and passing it to the translator.

The configuration manager allows for customization of printer characteristics, font mapping, and translation options. The logging and auditing subsystem integrates with the z/OS system logs to record events and provide an audit trail. Communication between components occurs within the z/OS environment, utilizing standard z/OS protocols.

The product does not use any dedicated databases or storage mechanisms beyond the z/OS system logs for auditing. Network requirements include connectivity to PCL printers via TCP/IP. The configuration manager uses JCL and configuration files to define printer settings, font mappings, and translation options.

Security is managed through z/OS security profiles, with authentication relying on z/OS user IDs and passwords. Compared to competing products, VPS/PCL offers superior integration with the z/OS environment and robust AFP document fidelity.
