The VPS/IPDS architecture comprises three main components: the Input Processor, the Data Transformer, and the Output Writer. The Input Processor reads the input data, which can be AFP or line data. It handles the initial parsing and validation of the input data stream.
The Data Transformer is the core of the system, converting the input data into the IPDS format. This component handles data stream transformations, resource management (fonts, overlays), and page formatting. The Output Writer sends the formatted IPDS data to the specified printer.
It manages the communication with the printer, including error handling and status reporting. These components interact using internal z/OS mechanisms. The system uses standard z/OS facilities for data storage and retrieval.
Network connectivity to the IPDS printers is required, typically using TCP/IP. The system is administered through JCL and configuration files, with security managed by z/OS security features, such as RACF. Monitoring is done through z/OS system logs.
