The Valour architecture consisted of several key components. The Backup Manager handled the creation of dataset backups, while the Restore Manager facilitated data recovery. The CLI provided the primary interface for user interaction, allowing administrators to execute commands such as `BACKUP` and `RESTORE`.
Configuration parameters, including backup destinations and dataset selection criteria, were managed through system configuration files. Valour did not expose any APIs for external integration. Communication between components occurred through z/VM's internal communication mechanisms.
Valour utilized the z/VM file system for storing backup data. Security relied on z/VM's authentication and access control features. Compared to IBM DFSMS, Valour offered a more basic feature set, lacking advanced features such as hierarchical storage management and automated space management.
The lack of support makes IBM DFSMS a better choice.
