The architecture of Tivoli Space Manager (TSM) comprised several key components. The Archive Manager was responsible for identifying and archiving datasets based on predefined policies. The Recall Manager handled the retrieval of archived datasets.
The Policy Engine defined the criteria for archiving, including dataset selection, storage location, and retention periods. These components interacted with the z/OS operating system through system calls and APIs. TSM utilized configuration files to define archive policies, storage groups, and other operational parameters.
The primary storage mechanism was the z/OS file system and supported storage media. Communication between components occurred through internal z/OS mechanisms. TSM did not expose any external APIs.
TSM is no longer supported; IBM recommends migrating to IBM Storage Archive or IBM Cloud Object Storage.
