Product Overview

SMP/E's architecture centers around several key components. The CSI (Consolidated Software Inventory) data set is the central repository, storing metadata about installed software, including SYSMODs, FMIDs, and dependencies. Zones are another critical component, defining the environment for software installation and maintenance.

There are several types of zones, including target zones (where software is installed) and distribution zones (where software updates are staged). The SMP/E command processor is the core engine, interpreting and executing commands like `RECEIVE`, `APPLY`, and `ACCEPT`. These commands interact with the CSI to update software metadata and install software components.

SMP/E uses a hierarchical structure to manage software, with SYSMODs representing individual software modifications. The process involves receiving SYSMODs, applying them to the target libraries, and accepting them to integrate the changes. SMP/E also includes utilities for managing libraries, resolving dependencies, and ensuring software integrity.

The communication between components is primarily through the z/OS operating system's services and data sets. SMP/E's architecture is designed to provide a robust and reliable software management solution for z/OS systems. It differs from other software management tools by its deep integration with the z/OS operating system and its focus on mainframe software.
