The VPF (Virtual Print Facility) architecture on z/OS consists of several key components. The Print Server receives print jobs, validates them, and places them in the spool. The Spool Manager handles the queuing and storage of print jobs, managing job priorities and retention policies.
The Output Processor formats the print data and sends it to the appropriate printers. These components communicate via internal messaging and shared file systems. The REST API provides programmatic access to these functions.
The API endpoints include /printjobs for job submission, /jobs/{job_id} for status monitoring, and /printers for printer management. Authentication is handled via RACF, and authorization is managed through RBAC. Data transmission uses HTTPS for secure communication.
Configuration files define printer definitions, network settings, and security policies. The system uses TCP/IP for network communication, with configurable ports. Detailed audit logs track user actions, print job submissions, and security-related events.
Compared to other print solutions, VPF offers a more streamlined integration with other Beta Systems products and enhanced security features.
