Product Overview

The architecture of PKZIP VM comprised several key components. The primary interface was a command-line interface (CLI), which accepted user commands and options. The CLI parsed user input and invoked the appropriate compression or decompression modules.

The compression modules implemented the core algorithms for data compression and expansion. These modules handled the actual compression and decompression of files. File I/O components managed the reading and writing of data to and from storage devices.

There were no external APIs. The system did not use a database. Communication between components occurred through function calls within the z/VM environment.

The system did not have specific network requirements. The main configuration parameters were set through command-line options. For example, the `-level` option controlled the compression level.

The `-password` option allowed for password protection of archives. The product's main competitors included Info-ZIP and other compression utilities available on z/VM. PKZIP VM's key advantage was its integration with the z/VM environment, but it is no longer supported.
