Product Overview
The Barr/Print Channel architecture is built around three core components: the Channel Interface, Print Spooler, and Output Processor. The Channel Interface handles communication with the mainframe via ESCON or Bus and Tag channels, receiving print data and commands. The Print Spooler manages print jobs, providing features such as prioritization, hold/release, and error handling.
It stores print jobs and manages the print queue. The Output Processor formats the print data for the target Windows printer, converting mainframe-specific formats to formats compatible with the printer. Communication between components occurs internally using proprietary protocols.
The product uses TCP/IP for communication with Windows printers. Configuration is managed through a GUI-based interface, allowing administrators to define printer settings, channel configurations, and print job routing rules. The system uses a file-based storage mechanism for print jobs and configuration data.
Security features include user authentication and audit logging. The product supports a variety of Windows-compatible printers, ensuring compatibility with various printing needs.
