The architecture of WebSphere eXtreme Scale (WXS) is based on a distributed, in-memory data grid. Key components include the ObjectGrid, Catalog Service, Container Servers, and Client applications. The ObjectGrid stores data as key-value pairs, partitioned and distributed across Container Servers.
The Catalog Service manages the grid topology and provides metadata about the data distribution. Container Servers host data partitions and handle data replication and failover. Client applications interact with the grid using the Java API or REST APIs.
Communication between components uses TCP/IP. Security is implemented through JAAS and Kerberos for authentication, and RBAC for access control. Data encryption in transit is supported via SSL/TLS.
WXS supports horizontal scalability by adding more Container Servers. Monitoring is performed through the administrative console and CLI. Backups and restores can be performed using provided utilities or external solutions.
Compared to Redis, WXS offers more robust enterprise features, including advanced security and management capabilities.
