SMFUTIL

SMFUTIL's architecture is centered on JCL-driven operations within the z/OS environment. The main components include the DUMP, CLEAR, ARCHIVE, and RETRIEVE modules. These modules are invoked through JCL jobs, which define the input and output datasets, along with various control parameters.

The DUMP module extracts SMF data, the CLEAR module clears datasets, the ARCHIVE module stores data, and the RETRIEVE module retrieves data based on specified criteria. Data storage utilizes z/OS datasets, with options for compression and encryption during archiving. Communication between components occurs through the z/OS operating system and the JCL job execution environment.

There are no specific API endpoints. Security is managed through z/OS security features, such as RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret, ensuring that only authorized users can access and manipulate SMF data. Data encryption is supported during the archiving process.

Compared to other utilities, SMFUTIL offers more flexible data retrieval options and efficient archiving processes, making it a robust solution for SMF data management. The JCL-based approach allows for easy integration with existing z/OS automation and scheduling tools.
