Product Overview

The architecture of Item Access Facility (IAF) comprised several key components. The Print Capture component intercepted print output from z/OS applications. This component utilized system resources to capture print streams.

The Indexing component created indexes for efficient searching and retrieval of print output. This component processed the captured print data and generated indexes. The Retrieval component provided access to the stored output through ISPF panels and batch utilities.

This component allowed users to view, search, and manage their print jobs. IAF used datasets for storing print output and configuration data. The system integrated with z/OS security for access control.

There were no external APIs. The system did not utilize external databases. The system was administered through ISPF panels and batch utilities.

The recommended replacement is Content Manager OnDemand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the primary function of Item Access Facility?

Item Access Facility (IAF) was designed to capture, view, and manage print output on the z/OS platform. It provided a centralized system for handling printed reports and documents, allowing users to access and control their print jobs. The system offered features for archiving, retrieving, and distributing print output.

How did users access and view print output within IAF?

IAF allowed users to view print output through various interfaces, including ISPF panels and batch utilities. It provided tools for searching, filtering, and managing print jobs. Users could also customize their viewing experience by adjusting display settings and selecting specific output formats.

What archiving capabilities did IAF offer?

IAF supported the archiving of print output, enabling long-term storage and retrieval of reports and documents. Archived output could be accessed through the same interfaces used for viewing current print jobs. This archiving capability was crucial for compliance and historical data analysis.

How did IAF integrate with the z/OS environment?

IAF integrated with z/OS systems to capture print output from various applications and subsystems. It utilized system resources to manage print jobs and provide access to users. The system's architecture was designed to handle large volumes of print data efficiently.
