The architecture of Infosphere Discovery comprises several key components that work together to discover and analyze data relationships. The Data Source Connector is responsible for connecting to various database systems, including mainframe databases like DB2, IMS, VSAM, CA Datacom, and CA IDMS. This component extracts metadata and data samples from the connected sources.
The Metadata Repository serves as a central storage location for the extracted metadata, including information about tables, columns, relationships, and data types. The Analysis Engine processes the extracted metadata and data samples to identify data connections, potential data duplication, and sensitive data. This engine uses algorithms to analyze the data and generate reports on the discovered relationships.
The User Interface provides a graphical interface for users to interact with the system. It allows users to configure data source connections, define analysis jobs, view the results of the analysis, and manage the system. Communication between components occurs over standard network protocols such as TCP/IP.
The Data Source Connector communicates with the databases using database-specific protocols. The Metadata Repository uses a database to store the metadata. The Analysis Engine interacts with the Data Source Connector to retrieve data and with the Metadata Repository to store and retrieve metadata.
The User Interface communicates with the Analysis Engine and the Metadata Repository to display results and manage the system. The product supports authentication methods that depend on the underlying database systems. It uses the security features of the underlying database systems, including role-based access control (RBAC).
Audit logging is provided by the underlying database systems. Key competitors include Informatica Data Catalog and Collibra. Unlike some competitors, Infosphere Discovery focused on deep analysis of mainframe databases.
However, IBM support ended in 2016, and users should consider alternative solutions.
