DFSORT's architecture comprises several key components: the SORT control program, I/O modules, the sort work area manager, and record selection and modification routines. The SORT control program coordinates the overall sorting process, interpreting control statements and managing the execution flow. I/O modules handle data input and output operations, supporting various file formats and record types.
The sort work area manager allocates and manages the memory used for sorting operations, optimizing memory usage for performance. Record selection and modification routines allow for filtering and transforming data during the sort process. Communication between components is primarily internal, managed through system calls and shared memory.
DFSORT uses system-level resources for storage, including disk and memory. Configuration is managed through JCL and SYSIN control statements. For example, the `SORT` command with the `FIELDS` parameter specifies the sort keys and their attributes.
The `COPY` command copies files, and `MERGE` combines sorted files. DFSORT integrates with the operating system's security features, such as RACF, for access control. Monitoring and logging are provided through SMF records, which capture detailed information about sort jobs, including resource usage and performance metrics.
DFSORT's design prioritizes performance and efficiency, leveraging the z/OS and z/VSE/VSEn environments.
