Product Overview

IBM z/OS Platform for Apache Spark was designed to bring Apache Spark's distributed processing capabilities to the z/OS environment. The architecture comprised several key components: the Spark Master, responsible for resource management and job scheduling; Spark Workers, which executed tasks; and the Spark Driver, which coordinated the application. Communication between these components used standard Spark protocols.

The platform integrated with z/OS security features, such as RACF, for authentication and authorization, and supported encryption for data in transit and at rest. Standard Spark APIs were exposed, allowing developers to write applications in Scala, Java, Python, and R. Common commands included 'spark-submit' for job submission and 'spark-sql' for executing SQL queries.

Configuration was managed through Spark configuration files. Competing products include community-supported Apache Spark, Cloudera Data Platform, and Hortonworks Data Platform. A key architectural difference was the tight integration with z/OS.

Note: IBM z/OS Platform for Apache Spark is no longer supported. Consider migrating to IBM Open Data Analytics for z/OS or another supported Spark distribution.
