The architecture of DEF comprises several key components: the Encryption Engine, the Key Management System (KMS), the Command Processor, and the API Interface. The Encryption Engine performs the actual encryption and decryption operations, supporting algorithms like AES and Triple DES. The Key Management System (KMS) is responsible for the secure generation, storage, and management of encryption keys.

The Command Processor handles user commands and system operations, providing a command-line interface (CLI) for administrative tasks. The API Interface allows applications to integrate encryption functionality. Communication between components occurs through internal system calls and shared memory.

The KMS utilizes secure storage mechanisms to protect encryption keys. Network requirements are minimal, as the system primarily operates within the z/OS environment. The system integrates with RACF for authentication and access control, ensuring secure access to encrypted data and encryption keys.

The audit logging feature records all encryption and decryption operations, key management activities, and administrative actions.
