Database Director

The architecture of Database Director was centered around its ability to perform online reorganizations of IMS databases. The core component was the Reorganization Engine, which handled the actual data movement and restructuring within the database. The Control Manager was responsible for coordinating the reorganization process, managing resources, and ensuring data integrity.

The product utilized JCL (Job Control Language) for job submission and execution within the z/OS environment. Control cards were used to specify the reorganization parameters, such as the database name, the type of reorganization, and any specific options. Communication between components occurred through z/OS system services, including access to IMS databases and system-level functions.

The product did not expose any external APIs. The primary storage mechanism was the IMS database itself, with temporary datasets used during the reorganization process. There were no specific network requirements or exposed ports.

The product's functionality was primarily accessed through a command-line interface. Database Director supported DEDB (Fast Path) database reorganizations. The product is no longer supported.
