The architecture of CA LPD comprises several key components: the LPD Listener, the Spool Interface, and the Format Converter. The LPD Listener is responsible for receiving print requests from LPR clients over TCP/IP, typically on port 515. The Spool Interface interacts with the JES spool on the z/OS mainframe, managing the queuing and processing of print jobs.
The Format Converter ensures that reports generated on different platforms are correctly formatted for printing on mainframe printers or storage in mainframe-related report management systems. Communication between these components occurs internally, using z/OS system services and APIs. Configuration files are used to define printer settings, queue definitions, and other operational parameters.
The product integrates with the z/OS security infrastructure, including authentication and access control mechanisms. The product does not expose external APIs. The primary data storage mechanism is the JES spool, which stores print jobs and associated metadata.
Network requirements include TCP/IP connectivity between the LPR clients and the z/OS mainframe, with the LPD Listener listening on a configurable port.
